This portrait, more of a sketch, was meant to be a more finished piece. I took the photo upon which this is based, and I did several preliminary sketches. When I began the pastel version, I realized I was painting from memory. This picture is based as much on memory as observation. The subject is a friend from 1985. He is a poet, singer-songwriter, musical theatre composer and living legend in Laguna Beach, California. He is completely unique and often unfathomable. I notice this version has a little greenish half circle around the left eye reminiscent of that of Seven of Nine in the StarTrek series. Somehow it is appropriate. With this man, “resistance is futile.” All done on LuxArchival paper with Terry Ludwig pastels.
